Hello! I recently bought this boat. First couple of times taking it out I heard what sounded like a "steady but intermetient grinding or whining"-not a beep or series of beeps coming from control panel. Hearing on here it might be an overheat alarm, I took it in, had the impellar replaced, carbs rebuilt, plugs changed. I took it out yesterday and same sound comes on after awhile. I checked primper bulb and it wanted to stay almost folded in half, would not get firm, even when runnin the engine. The engine will run ok, then occasionally sputter and it dies if ideling too long. Had to attempt to start over and over after running to get it on the trailer! After reading some posts, wondering if it could be a fuel restriction problem and how to trouble shoot? Thank you in advance!

Did you make sure the tank is vented...or maybe the pick up tube is clogged...

A collapsed primer bulb is usally the fuel system from boat to engine..if the tank is built in check the vent line...take off the tank and run either mechanics wire or some line from weed wacker in it,,,,

also make sure the fuel line from tank to boat is healthy...not rotted in side...bulb may be shot...

then check tank vent....and the pick up tube....some have a strainer screen on the end....

if you have another portable tank check with that one also....

Are you using a VRO with separate oil tank?

If the primer bulb on your gas line is collapsing you have a fuel obstruction between the primer bulb and the fuel supply or in the bulb itself.

Fuel obstructions of this type are generally caused by one of the following:

Tank not vented;

Fuel pickup screen clogged;

Failed or sticking anti-siphon valve;

Fouled fuel filter;

Fuel line too small for engine;

Primer bulb valves not working or arrow not facing engine.

Re: 1989 evinrude 100 xp oil/fuel restriction?

Is the stuck primer bulb for the oil tank/line or the fuel?

I had a little debris in the oil tank when I bought my old 89 johnson/ 69 pontoon combo. It was almost at 1/4 tank when I filled it up the first time and I guess I stirred up a little sludge.

I would guess the same check that are outlined to check the fuel line is clear would work for the oil line.

My 89 Johnson 40 had a fuel filter that you could not see through on it when I bought it and I replaced that with a transparent one so I could visually verify that there was fuel in the sytem and the bulb was priming it.

Thanks for all the advice guys! I really appreciate it. Can anyone provide a little more information on servicing the pick up tube and screen? I have been told there is a little ball spring I need to 'pull out and clean with carb cleaner and air." There are 2 hoses that I can see to the gas tank. I will probably replace the bulb assembly and hose to make sure that isn't the problem. Any help on how to properly get into/ clean "pick up" would be greatly appreciated!

The pickup is the tube that runs to the inside bottom of your fuel tank and has a screen to prevent debris from entering the tube.

At the top of the tank the USCG required anti-siphon valve is usually located in the fitting - that's the ball and spring -it prevents the fuel from being siphoned out of your tank in case of a fuel leak in the line.

Most built-in tanks have a fitting at the top that can be loosened or removed to lift out the pickup and the outlet with the anti-siphon valve.

Do the stuff Ezeke mentioned.

One of those two hoses is probably a hose to the air vent inlet. Make sure that's not clogged - see if you can find where it goes and blow back towards the tank to see if it passes air easily.

Re: 1989 evinrude 100 xp oil/fuel restriction?

Update! I finally got her running somewhat good with a buddies help and I'm hoping you guys can help me trouble shoot. We raised the idle so it doesn't die as much and that helped tremendously.

When started up,(using cold start procedure I learned on here-ball hard, push key in 7 seconds, turn key, bump to keep alive) she smokes a pretty thick cloud of whiteish smoke. My friend says this is because the motor's not getting enough oxygen. Eventually, after warming up, the smoke is normal for what I have experienced for outboards..Is this right?

Can anyone point me to how to adjust the throttle? I have to push it way forward, wait for the boat to catch up, then back if off to maintain the speed.

Thank you for the help!

An important not I left out: the engine will idle well but now in no wake speed I have to listen for it to weaken and before it dies, pull it into neutral and raise the fast idle lever a bit then put it into gear quickly and give it some gas. The tank is new, the bulb assem. new, my mechanic found a peice of fuel hose that had a leak and replaced it. Do you guys think this is air related instead of fuel related?

Thanks!
