1990 90 Hp Johnson Starter

My starter on my 1990 90hp Johnson is was acting up last season. When you turn the key the motor will turn 1-2 cranks then nothing. release the key and try again and it will begin to turn the motor over like normal. This happens every time the moter has cooled down and is restarted. The Battery is brand new and was replaced after the starter began acting up. Same issues after replacing battery. All cables look clean with no corrision. Do I just need to buy a new Starter?

Could just be a dirty brush inside the starter, if it's not starter related, you should try posting in the johnson/evinrude outboards section, you're more likely to get a better response

hey sc, quick test to rule out the wiring is to get some jumper cables and run them straight from the battery to the starter motor.

Hook one side of the cables to the battery and then the ground on the other side to your engine ground. Then take the red (positive) side of the jumper cables and touch the positive terminal on the starter. The engine should start cranking right away if you have the grounds hooked up right.


If the engine cranks normally during this test then the problem is in the motor cables, connections or solenoid. If you get the same result it is either the battery or the starter.
