My problem now is that the motor will turn over only with high idle but then dies unless I keep the choke on. As soon as I let the choke go, it starts to die so I have to keep bumping it.

It will only idle for a few seconds and then dies with out the high idle. Also If I take off the air cover in front of the carbs ther is a little lever on the bottom carb, where the choke solenoid is, that lever is for emergncy start according to the manual so if I pull that out it starts and idles high but the high idle lever on the 703 remote still has to be up or it will not start. So it only start with high idle lever and choke but will not idle, if i put down the high idle lever. Also if I lower the high idle lever and kick it into gear its fine, I can rev it up WOT and no problem.

Does this seem like I need to adjust the pilot screw? and if I do is it the same for all three carbs? I just ordered the manual so I should have it here this week, but untill it gets here whats the soulution?

what gives ? I did the carbs with new seals and cleaned them. It ran good for a while and now this is happening What else could be causing this?

Also I looked at the spark plugs and they seem to be black and wet(all 3 of them). I also have some black oily film in the engine tank where I have been running this motor.

Thanks for the help.

hello
does this engine have actual choke plates that close or is it a prime start type? my tune up guide lists the 40 until 95 as a ckoke version. anyway what you have is clogged idle circuits. its common.
I tried to warn ya but ya told me I was wrong. I could be I have only delt with this for 30 years or so.
this problem is typical. belive me or not I just try to help. I will tell you you have a precision high performance piece of equipment designt to run at top speed at its rated horsepower for hours on end if everything is perfect. that is why I said flush the system rebuild the carbs and replace or rebuild the fuel pump.
now we are back to looking at fuel problems.
good luck and keep posting
