While removing my out drive prior to engine removal I found a piece of one of the water shutters stuck behind the shift rod. It looked as if it had been too hot(?), and came off at the hinge point. Since I am pulling the engine for replacement I will go ahead and replace the shutters as well as all of the bellows. My question is, has anybody seen this and is it a normal occurrence for the water shutters to come loose like this? This engine had run hot on previous owner during an outing. His engine had not been winterized properly and suffered a cracked block due to freeze damage resulting in oil and water mixing. Could the overheating have anything to do with the shutter coming off? The serial numbers on this are ,
(Transom 0F665915) (Drive 0F665481) (Engine 0F774660). Engine is going to be replaced. Thanks for any help and advice.

Water shutters do break and heat is the major issue which can cause it to happen, the other is just time.
