Took lower end off in neutral (apparently a no no, reading posts) replaced water pump impeller and now can't get the lower end up tight. Turned the flywheel and got it seated about an inch away. Now no matter what i do (shifting forward, neutral, reverse) i can't get that last inch. Greased all the splines (not the top). Wiggled and pushed and swore :) still nothing. What is hanging me up? Do i need to drop it again and start over fresh with a different procedure? Thanks

Sure you hit the water-tube with the impeller house?

Did you remove the rubber seal and collar when the drive came out?
Drop the drive, look up inside.
Then did the shift rod align right?
Shift into F
Then, from the rear turn the shift shaft to the left as you pull up on the prop blade on the right side, again looking from the rear.

so drop it, put it in forward on the controls. From the back, turn the shift shaft ccw and the prop ccw while trying to reseat it all again? I was going to try that, but i figured turning it ccw would turn the blades of the impeller ccw.

I had similar problem. Hammer didn't help. You have to align shift rod as well if its that far I would say your shift rod is not aligned, leave it in neutral controls and cam. Keep turning fly wheel, you got to have friend helping. Can't do it by yourself. Take it easy. GL

Drop the unit, turn the shift shaft CCW or left.
Shift shifter to F
Then pull UP on the right ear of the prop with the right hand.
Or use a set of Vice grips and lift up with the right hand. This puts the drive in gear.
It will rotate the drive shaft so the splines mesh.
All the time look and see if everything lines up.

Jaykatatonic- yours is a 3 jaw reverse. If the 1998 Merc is also a 3 jaw then YES! If the part no on the Merc is 1 below then go for it. If 2 below, NO!
