Hello,
I just purchased this '96 sport jet 120 Very clean and in good order. When I took this boat to the river for the Shakedown it started right up and ran very smooth for almost exactly 20 minutes, would not restart and acted like it was not getting any fuel. When I loaded it back onto the trailer I tried to start it again while still in water and it fired up great ran for awhile and stopped. Looked in manual and it seemed like I needed to clean my anti-siphon valve, which I did. Took it back out and it did the same thing. I am not getting an overheat alarm but it may be inop. any advice you can give would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

First of all you need to check all grounds ! Then establish if you are loosing spark or are you are loosing fuel pressure. 1996 should have the red stator but they are always suspect .
Put it back in the water or hook up a flush kit if you have one , Remember NEVER run one of these out of the water without a flush kit , You will blow the ride plate off the hull. Once it stalls check for spark . No spark start by disconnecting the black / yellow wire at the switchbox , This will eliminate the shut down circuit. if you have spark , Prime the carbs if you have a pump bulb. If it starts then let it stall again , remove the fuel line to the carbs and crank it with the line in a glass jar and see if you have good smooth fuel flow , It should not "pulse" . No fuel flow or pulsing fuel would indicate a bad fuel pump diaphragm or a blocked fuel pickup but I would suspect the diaphragm.

These are just a few things to try if they do not work post up results , Get an OHM / DVA meter and we can start testing !

Thank you very much! I did not think of an electrical problem, or a problem with the diaphram, I will try it out tomorrow, and let you know how it goes. After doing some more research I am going to take more of your advice and go ahead and get a flush kit for that, so I don't have to run down to the river every time I need to check a repair. Again I appreciate your help. Bill

Hello,
Well yesterday I went to the hardware store to get fittings so I could hook up the water hose and hooked it up and turned on the water, when I went to start it the fly wheel was jammed up, pulled plugs and water came pouring out the bottom plugs. Apparently I had a bit too much pressure going in. Spent the rest of the day trying to dry it out! I did check for spark late yesterday afternoon/evening on the second plug down from the top. It did not look to be getting any fire. I did not know if that had anything to do with saturating the system or not. Anyhow last night I could not get it to start. This morning on my way to work I hit the key one quick time and it fired up straight away, I quickly shut it down (2 sec.). My new question is; is there a certain amount of water pressure that I need to set the hose to so I do not flood out the whole motor? I was so geeked about finding the solution to my problem and now I am back to frustrated. I will hopefully have some time tonight to start over. Thanks again.
Bill
p.s. I found 3 ground's on the block all seemed to be in good order. I also tested and verified that my overheat sensor is functioning.

start the engine, and then the water. (reverse that for shutdown, water, then engine) You want a shutoff at the connection point to the engine flush system so you aren't having to run to the main hose connection.

The factory flush kit has a water restricter in it to reduce flow , I think 10 psi is the max for a unrestricted fitting . I will check and post up tonight . I know you just need a smooth unpressured flow coming out .

Thanks Guys!
Great idea on the water shut off at the boat. I will have to go with that first, I will have to find the OEM kit later, or find a flow restricter.

No update! Could not get it to start last night. I put a charger on the battery when I left for work this morning. Hoping for better luck tonight. Thanks again for your help. I am almost willing to incur the wrath of my wife and surprise the family with a brand new Bayliner 175! I can pay for it by working when I would normally be out on the water with my son's.
