At times, when shifting in "F", my drive will not shift immediately. There is a delay. This is usually when just going slow and initially shifting into forward. My brass shift "barrell" on the cable at the outdrive is screwed in all the way, which means I can get no more "forward travel" out of the cable. I figured I'd gain a little travel from the helm cable adjustment. I pulled the shifter out and found that there is no threaded end on the shifter end of the cable. It is just an eye hole. So.....question is, how can I gain a little travel of the cable? Did the cable stretch a bit? I have an OMC shifter on a 248 Four Winns Cruiser. I am the second owner and imagine the current setting/adjustment is the OEM. Most of the time it is fine and maybe this is the nature of the beast but I wanted to inquire....

In your title, you say 2000 VP, and in your post you say OMC shifter ???? I take it that the boat has been repowered with a 2000 VP, because in 2000, OMC didn't exist.

could have also been rigged with leftover JV stuff.
that cable is almost impossible to find now.
its OMC on the controll end and 33 series on the drive end.
it allowed a sgared control box from either volvo or OMC boxs depending on the cable.
it can be retrofit with a 33 series cable but you will have to use the 33 to late style OMC BRP control box.
I have a close friend thatin the summer of 98 I repowered his 25 parker with a WT 5.7 package and thats what control box came with it from the selling dealership.
thats how I know how difficult finding the correct cable can be and how to install a 33 series cable in an OMC control box.
at the time of purchase the dealership was an OMC and Volvo dealer.

Thanks for the response. This is all original. I guess 4 winns had lots of shifters because it is an OMC shifter. My 2000 boat is in the era where I have a "cobra" dark gray (charcol) engine (not orange). I know the original owner and the dealer that sold it. It is all OEM. Actually a firend has the same boat witht he same powertrain and is the same. I was just surprised that the helm end of the shift (and throttle for that matter) had no threads for adjustment! Just an eye. Is this common? I will say that there were 2 holes to pick from on the shifter but I'm not going to change that. That would change the travel too much and like I said, it works fine for the most part. I just wanted to try to "tweak" a little more forward engagement if I could. That's what opened this can of worms!

Have you checked the oil level in your outdrive? Eratic shifting is a symptom of a too full drive.

My SX drive was overfilled and my engine was (intermittently) revving up before forward was engaging. I haven't run the boat since I discovered the drive was overful, but mine was 2-3 inches above the full mark on the dipstick.
