I have one of these that after running a bit goes into the fail safe. This is usually after a semi hard run. Water pressure (15psi) and temp (155 deg). This is intermittant and impossible to duplicate on demand. Engine has 51 hours it. It is one of 3 on the boat.

I assume this will store a code in the computer system. I have the factory Mercury service manual and the know how to diag. What I don't have is the scan tool mentioned in the manual. Is there another way (with a test light or diode) to check for codes? I assume there is, but need help. If I can retrieve a code, I can diagnose. Please advise.

Thanks in advance.

Re: 2004 Mercury 300x

You need to have it scanned. That's about the only way you'll find out for sure what code is come up. I wish it were as easy to buy a scanner for a car.
It's not the cost of the scanner will cause you to fall out, not say anything about the software ouch !!!!
