Hello,
I was wondering if anyone could give me any assistance on what I need to do to convert the lower unit of my 2004 Mercury 90 HP Saltwater Series from a 25-inch XL shaft to a 20-inch Long shaft. The model that I have is 90EXLPTO. It appears that the only difference between a 90EXLPTO (25-inch) and a 90ELPTO (20-inch) is the size of the shaft.
Is it easy to convert the 90EXLPTO to a 20-inch shaft. I looked at the parts diagram and it appears that the 25-inch has a removable spacer. Do I simply have to remove the 25-inch spacer and swap out the 25-inch drive shaft to a 20-inch drive shaft? Does the 20-inch need a spacer?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I purchased this motor recently and want to convert down to a 20-inch shaft before I put in on the boat.
Do you think it'll be okay to run the 25-inch shaft on the 20-inch transom. I understand that performance will be degraded, but I don't really need to go super fast.
