25HP Yamaha Outboard Fuel Problem

I am having what I think is a fuel problem with a 1993 25HP (C25ELRR) Yamaha outboard engine.<br /><br />The engine had been left (covered) by the previous owner for about a year and not been winterized. This weekend I replaced the spark plugs and tried to start her up. We got it to turn over with B12 into the carburetor air intake, however it dies quickly after burning the carburetor cleaner up and seems to be having a problem getting fuel. We checked and cleaned the fuel filter, made sure the fuel line bulb was tight, took apart the fuel pump and even watched fuel come out of the fuel pump when we squeezed the bulb. We tried again and she tried to turn over w/o the assistance of the B-12, but no luck. At this point my limited knowledge is exhausted and my best guess is the carburetor is gummed up or it needs a new fuel filter. I have not yet tried to advance the throttle while pumping the fuel bulb. Can anyone help with what might be the problem and possible solution(s)?<br /><br />Thanks.

Based on your notes, I would suggest it it a carb problem. TRemoving them, cleaning with gas and ether would be appropirate. Compressed air would help the process. The center jet will be the one most effected by the old fuel and oil mix. Once cleaned, dry them and blow out the jets with the an air gun. Compressed air in a can will work, but it is costly. Cleasn the plugs, regap befor installing. Install and pump full of gas, bulb tight. Do not use ether (starting fluid) to force the motor to start. It will damage the block. You may try a small spray bottle of fuel into the intake, but be careful not to drip gas onto the motor as a fire will result. That motor should start without much effort if it is tuned. Make sure your battory has a full charge as a weak one will cause the starter to overheat and fail. If your fuel tank has not been purged and cleaned, do so. Old fuel no start.

Thanks Thom<br /><br />I have time to work on the carb this weekend but have never worked on one before. Is the carb difficult to remove? When I have it removed, how do I identify the jets? <br /><br />Any tips or advice on removing the carb and jets would be much appreciated.<br /><br />John
