Only being new to this inboard boat engine game I am learning a lot but could do with some help. I want to start building up a really nice engine during the winter months to fit in the spring. Are there any reasons why I shouldn't use a truck block as a base for this? What if any differences are there between a truck block and a marine block and if I am offered one what will distinguish a marine block from a truck block? Thanks for your help in advance.

Cam and core plugs are the only difference between marine and automotive.
Since you are wanting to "Build" and engine, I suggest you start by doing some research and searches on reversion. Lots of car guys modify and engine like they would a car only to find major problems with valve overlap and sucking water back into the cylinders from the exhaust. You also need low end and medium range torque, more that a lot of high rpm HP ratings.

Thanks Don, I am not looking to make any changes from standard specification, no uprated tuning etc. I just want to build a decent reliable stock engine using bits I have been given already. The reason for asking about the blocks is that a used truck engine is very cheap here in England compared to used marine engine, so if I can save some money buy not paying "marine" prices I will have more to spend on other boat specific items. Thanks for the info.
