I aquired this motor with no history. It's extremely clean.A freind of mine is a lifetime outboard hobbiest and he got it running well with the help of new coils that he had lying around. A problem it had before we touched it we hoped would "go away" once it ran, namely that it will not shift into gear. Its funny, because when you manually turn the prop, it turns the powerhead, but the powerhead will not turn the lower unit. He wanted to know is there a common place to look for something bent or broken before he dives in? The shift lever will not move forward and its a plastic one and you dont want to force it. Its also a longshaft if that matters. thanks.

sounds like you need to drop the lower unit and investigate. shift rod could not have been connected properly. while there install a new impeller.

Hi
Some longshaft moters have have two shift rods,as TD said change impeller
while lu is off check bothsets of clamps on shift rod.
Take a look on the evinrude parts list you will see what I mean.
With the lu off the shift lever should be free in its movement, and shift rod
should move up and down.
If all is ok here you will have to open lu to check shifter fork/shift cradle/
dog clutch and splines for wear.
Sounds a lot but if you take you time and lay out removed parts in order,
its quite easy.
If you get stuck-just ask.
