77 Johnson 115 command center issues

I can currently shift into reverse and go all the way back. When attempting forward movement, I can go about 30* (to the indent) but it is not enough to engage the throttle. If I go any further, the gears get out of alignment and won't allow me to even get back to neutral. Nothing seems broken, and I have verified the alignment of the gears. Any thoughts?

Another, related, question. I'm contemplating just buying a new control box. I have the 400 series cables. Am I limited or will the 3300/33c boxes work as well (with or without any adapter kits)?

Thanks!

Disconnect the cables at engine and try again. isolate it to control or engine/gearbox

Agree with Bosun. Disconnect the shift cable and shift the engine by hand. If the engine shifts normally by hand, the problem is with the cable adjustment from the control box. You can also verify the shifting of the lower unit by observing the mechanism under the bottom carb. Esp. note the shift to forward at the clevis under the bottom carb. Make sure it's not hitting anything-preventing it from going fully into forward. Any chance that the lower unit was recently off the engine?

Thanks 'Mate. Shift control cable was outta whack big time putting tension on the gear so it wasn't staying in place until the teeth came back through. Now to charge the battery a little and make sure that everything is good. I'm starting to see a little light at the end of the tunnel! Who knows, might even get her wet this year!
