Hello,
I have an 84 Evinrude 90 hp. The last trip to lake it started running a little rough, so I pulled the plugs and found water droplets on #4 plug. Pulled head off to find oily grey sludge and water in #4 and also looked like #2 also had small traces of water. Replaced head gasket, Resurfaced head with sand paper on glass surface. Head showed no signs of being warped, cleaned up very easily. Compression check #1 120,#2 120,#3 120,#4 110. I Started engine and ran well at first, slowly started missing again. Pulled #4 plug to find water again!.....What should I look for next?
Thanks

Exhaust cover gaskets or plates.

When you have it apart for exhaust gaskets, make sure the inner cover doesn't leak. Many of these old castings develop porosity and can leak under pressure. You can aluminum weld to repair them. Common for exhaust leaks to affect the lower cyls.

I pulled exhaust cover and inner plate. I believe I found bad gasket, could see tell tale shiny area where gasket was leaking. Inner plate looks good....no corrosion. Ordered gaskets today. Will post with results.
Thanks for the help!

Re: 84 Evinrude E90TLCRD- water in cylinder

Hello,
Installed new exhaust gaskets, no more water in cylinders! Also installed new thermostats and poppets....the whole kit.(hope not to have to that again soon!) While touching the heads checking temps the #2 coil ground shocked me good. Does this indicate bad coil? (or bad ground)The other grounds do not do this. Can a coil for 120 '85 johnson be used if I put boot on my wire from power pack? Plug wire does fire across 7/16 gap with tester on the coil in question.
Thanks again for your help!
