I'm a rookie when it comes to working on outboards. We took out the boat this year and it wouldn't start. Ran fine last summer. A mechanic said we are getting 70 lbs of compression. Like to fix this myself, but could use some advice. Buying the repair manual, but any tips you could give me would be great.

Thanks!

Before deciding to repair, or beginning repairs, you need to determine the cause of the low compression.
Stuck rings?
broken rings?
Broken reeds?
Scored cylinders?
Are the pistons or head damaged?
And what is the condition of the rest of the motor?
How much are you willing to stick into it?
It may cost several times what the motor is worth,
and may be cheaper to replace with a decent used engine.

Once you identify what the problems are, there are many here that will be able to help with the specific repairs.

Started taking the engine apart, and the cylinders look fine, plan on taking a look at the rings tomorrow. As far as used engines go, what do you recommend, and where is a good place to pick one up?
