I have a 92 model 85hp Yamaha outboard. It has never been in the shop. It's in great shape. While running at 4800 rpm's my horn went off and the engine started to shutdown. I pulled back the stick and shutdown the engine. Checked the lower unit but no bags etc. I was in deep water. Started the engine and water was circulating in the engine. Ran at 4800 rpm's for 1/2 mile and the horn started to blow again. SHutdown - checked the lower unit - nothing. I started the engine and ran at 4000 rpm's for 25min to the launch and ran fine. Each time i started the engine back the horn was blowing until some water circulated thru the engine. The water pump is 1.5 years old and I change the thermostats 2 years OK. Should I go ahead and changed the water pump.

Thanks

Re: 85 Yamaha overheating

If it has good flow out the pee hole its more likely the thermostat. I have a 1991 90 and it has required three or for thermostats and only two impellers over the years.
