my motor will start run for a couple seconds and then stall, also sometimes when i am starting it, it will give a pop sound and a puff of smoke blows out of the exhaust. once I finally get it in gear and running it works great any ideas???

Personally I would start with a carburetor kit. If that doesn't help then a fuel
pump kit. But it is hard to tell what is really going on, it may be some other problem.
Without getting my hands on this motor, it is hard to diagnose. It might be best to have it diagnosed by a marine mechanic. Then decide if you want to do the work yourself.
