There is a bolt that goes through the shift rod, under the carburetors. Sometimes it's easier to reach with engine in reverse.

Check the shift linkage in the starboard side. Do you see a hitch pin stuck thru it where it goes under the side of the motor.
Take the shift cable off the motor, pull that pin, push that shift lever forward and then push it sideways towards the motor. That should release the shift linkage.

Re: 89 150 johnson water pump

I just did this job yesterday on an 89 225. Being totally new at this, I pulled the wrong pin at first on the gear selector. I pulled the one that looked like the one in the picture in the manual, but it clearly didn't make any sense. My buddy spotted the right one..the one under the carbs. If you've got this one out, I can't see why you would be stuck. Mine is a 3/8" hex with a slot for a flat head. Its threaded only 1/2 way, and the distal half is smooth, not threaded, and comes to a dull point. Is this like your set-up? If its sticking, maybe working the throttle back and forth will free the linkage.

I know what you mean about being hard to see in there. Its a real PIA. Also was the worst part about getting the lower unit back on. It has to be lined up just right to get the LU on that last 1". Your buddy holding the LU is going to be shaking with fatigue while you try to finesse that sucker in its home. I found I could turn the shift rod with a pair of needle nose pliers through a slot in the exhaust housing, which was the trick to getting the LU back on. I hope I don't have to do this again anytime soon.
