I'm new to the boating scene and was going to ask about a problem. I just bought a 1990 Bayliner with a 90 hp Force outboard. I've taken the boat out a few times and had some of the problems with the engine dieing (have read many posts about this) when I put in gear, but right now that's the least of my problems. Tonight, have it hooked to the hose and I'm trying to start it. While trying to start it, the crank snaps in two next to the flywheel. To say the least, I'm a little pissed  . My question is what caused this and how much am I looking to pay at a shop to get it fixed?

Are you referring to the engine crankshaft or something else? Please clarify with a more detailed description of your problem.

I'm referring to the crankshaft. While I was trying to start it, the top of the shaft just broke and the flywheel is no longer attached. The shaft looks like it is crystalized and shows a discolored spot from heat. Does this happen a lot? Should I look at buying a new motor or pay for a rebuild on this engine?

Unless you do the work yourself and have a line on some good used parts at very good prices, the cost of repair will exceed the value of the motor by many times.
