I own a 1990 Maxum with a 90 HP Force Outboard. The cylinder in the middle (#2?) is obviously not firing. The spark plug in that cylinder looks brand new with no signs of ever being fired since someone replaced them. I'm also sure that the carbs are completely out of adjustment. Could you please walk me through the procedures to correct these problems?

This is my first experience with an outboard motor.

Thank you.

An extremely clean plug (when the others are dirty by comparison) may indicate a blown head gasket or other source of water intrusion into the combustion chamber. The water turns to steam and scrubs the plug. You will lose power and the engine will run badly. Do a compression check. Before you do anything, however, get yourself a manual for this motor - the Seloc seems to be more user-friendly than the Clymer - but don't start working on it until you have some information in front of you expecially if this is your first motor. Good luck!

If that was the case, wouldn't there be some sign of moisture on the plug or in the plug hole?

The motor has been sitting for 3 years, after changing the gear oil and putting new gas in it, we took it to the lake to test it. It fired right up but it was under powered. I pulled the plugs and came to my previous determination.

Thanks.

Do a compression test, as you should periocically with a Force anyways. See if that cylinder is down on compression.

Usually its the CD. But you have a spare one. From the posting you said the spark plug is not firing. No spark, right.

Yep, it was the CD. I just turned #1 into #2 and visa versa. It worked like a champ. I'm thinking it might be ready for the water again. Woo Hoo!!

Re: 90 HP Force Outboard

Any pointers on adjusting the carbs? Also, are those CD's known for going bad? Do I really need to carry an extra? What else should I pack around as a bare minimum?

Thanks.
