92 SUZUKI 200 - MAX RPM - 3500

I REALIZE THIS IS PROBABLY A PROP PROBLEM - MY QUESTION IS - I AM HAPPY WITH THE PERFORMANCE ON MY 22' CRESTLINE ALUMINUM (25 MPH AT 2200 RPM & 45 MPH AT 3500 RPM) BUT AM I HURTING THE ENGINE WITH THE LOW RPM'S? - I HAVN'T RUN IT LONG ENOUGH TO CHECK FUEL USAGE BUT WOULD EXPECT IT TO BE BETTER THAN AT HIGH RPM - IS THERE ANY OTHER REASON I SHOULD RE-PROP TO GET HIGHER ENGINE RPM'S? - OTHER THAN TO GET BETTER PERFORMANCE - I WOULD TAKE FUEL ECONOMY OVER PERFORMANCE - HOLE SHOTS ARE FINE AND I KNOW THE CARBURATORS ARE GETTING FULL THROTTLE

If your engine is running right and not dropping a cylinder you are badly overpropped. The proper operating rpm should be somewhere around 5500 rpm (check the manual). Beyond the fact that you are only getting about 150hp out of a 200hp engine you are probably overheating it and carboning up the engine. It is essential that the engine operate at the proper rpm under WOT. Who selected the prop for this boat?

Does the engine appear to be running well? If not address that first before the prop issue.

Re: 92 SUZUKI 200 - MAX RPM - 3500

ITS A LONG STORY BUT WE JUST INSTALLED THE ENGINE ON MY BOAT AND THE ENGINE HAS LESS THAN 15 HRS - THE PROP CAME WITH THE MOTOR - IT IS 14 1/2 x 22 - 3 BLADE - SUZUKI ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT

ALL PLUGS ON EACH CYLINDER ARE GOLDEN - LOOK GOOD

DO YOU THINK THERE IS A CHANCE THE TAC IS NOT READING CORRECTLY? IS THERE A WAY TO CHECK RPM? - LOW IDLE IS 400 RPM - STARTS AND RUNS GREAT - THANKS

Yes an incorrect tachometer setup is possible. Some tachs have different settings for different kinds of engines (# cylinders, 2-stroke vs 4-stroke, etc.). Did your tach come with this engine? You should probably have a mechanic use a shop tach to verify the rpm before you get too wound up. If the tach is accurate though something is either wrong with the prop or the engine performance.
