After replacing the stator and voltage regulator, I changed the water pump on my 94 Force 40 serial number 0E065269 on the weekend for a little insurance. To drop the lower unit I had to undo the shifting rod and I forgot to chalk both sides of the nut adjustment. When I put it back together I had lost forward gear!! I got that adjusted so that I have forward and reverse and took it out on the water to test.

When I'm in forward, (not idling but under more load), I hear a rhythmic thump sound every 8 seconds or so which gives the boat a shudder. It only happens in gear and as I power back to idle it disappears.

I think the gear is jumping a tooth when it is under load--maybe I need to lengthen the shifting rod.

Does anyone have the original factory spec on how to set up the shift rod? Any other thoughts on what it might be?

Thanks guys
