My 96 175 Evinrude has become very hard to start and smokes like a military grade smoke gernade at idle. I had to give it a lot of throttle to get it running. I ran it on muffs today for about 5 minutes and found a lot of oil built up in the exhaust port at the prop. Is this normal? (I am a new boater)Been having this problem for the last 3 times on the water. After reading some other posts I feel like it could be the VRO pump. Am I going in the right direction?

Look for air leak in fuel lines from tank to pump. You can place your fingers on the VRO pump and feel the pulses of the pump, if the pump pulses are pumping like someone having a heart attack, the pump is sucking air. When this happens the pump pumps a lot of oil and not much gas.

Thanks for the reply, Sorry I couldn't reply faster, I was called away on. I did find a fuel leak right after the bulb pump. I put a new clamp on it and will try to test it in the next day or two.

I've never felt anyone having a heart attack, does this mean pumping hard or pumping soft? Just for future knowledge if my pump ever starts to go.

That would be "pulsing" extremly rapid, moreso than usual for sure.
