Can anyone tell me how to remove the corrosion from what I am assuming to be cast aluminum. The paint is peeling off and the surface is heavily corroded with white oxidation. I need to clean it up and repaint it. It is a hydraulic pump housing for the steering wheel.

Wire brush and/or sandpaper. Make sure to prime it with Zinc Chromate before you paint it.

A mild acid like vinegar is good for removing aluminum oxide. You also can buy muriatic(hydrochloric) acid by the gallon at Home Depot and dilute it as needed and do a good job a bit quicker. Good Luck!

I had great results using a Dremel. The small wire brush got into cracks and crevices other brushes did not touch.

Plastered bad pitting with JB Weld.

Ayuh,... I never tried that,... That's Mason's Wash, Correct,..??

What else can ya do with the stuff,..?? I just came into a full, unopened 5gal. pail of it...

Wirebrushin' aluminum is somewhat destructive if not Careful,..
'course the corrosion has already done most of the damage...
Using a SSteel brush won't leave carbon specks in the aluminum too,..
Not so important in paintin', but I weld the stuff,...already got the brush...
