I have all the gas leaks fixed now.I have the gas and oil mix at 16:1,like suggested. She idles down pretty low now also reeves up nice on the top end.
My question is there is a black film off oil or gease on top off the water in the barrel. Is this normal? Is there some where i put grease in the lower unit, the shaft seems to get hot or is this normal also.I'm a rookie when it comes to out boards.
Thanks Craig.

Re: another viking question

Oil slick is totally normal and scares all rookies. It is the oil that you put in the gas and it has gone thru the motor and done it's job. Some gets burned (smoke) and the rest goes out the exhaust into the barrel. It will seem much cleaner once you get it on a boat in the water.

Yes the lower unit takes lubricant in the gearcase. I do not know the specifics on that particular motor.

Edit: Oops, wrong motor concerning cooling. Look at the hole where the underwater exhaust comes out. Do you see a tube coming out and curved forward? If so, that is a ram tube for cooling the exhaust. The propeller forces water up through it and it spills out the top to run back down and cool off the exhaust. It works well on a boat, but poorly in a barrel.

No tube? Then your motor has a water pump to do the same job. In eaither case, there should be a water spray out some holes somewhere about half way down the leg.

Re: another viking question

There is a tube sticking out the bottom Frank. The only holes i see is at the top of the shaft and all that comes out is air when it's in the barrel maybe different on the boat.
I just got off the phone with discount marine and they told me to use 105 gear lube, how much should i get?Now when changing this i see 2 screws at the bottom both with flat heads.Top one small and bottom large.Do i remove the 2 or does this motor just have one drain and fill plug.Don't want to remove something i will regret as i'm trying to avoid a trip to the shop.
Thanks Craig.

Re: another viking question

My book shows a big one and a littler one above it. Put the oil in the lower one till it comes out the top. It can't hold very much, it isn't very big.
