I just signed up on E-bay. Want to purchase an item. So far I am the winning bidder. I have yet to sign up for Paypal but have seen thru a search on iboats that I should probably have a separate checking/credit card account for this purpose.

What advise and warnings can you give a newbie on ebay??

Thanks

NEVER respond to emails from ebay or paypal unless they are in your My ebay messages.

Never buy/sell off ebay. That can get ya into a sticky situation if you ain't careful.

"Hey I have the same thing and I will take X number of dollars for it" is usally a no-no.

Just remember on Ebay, it's buyer/seller beware.

In my experience and opinion, PayPal is the safest way to purchase. Try to buy from EBay'ers that have some history. Not saying a low feedack amount is necessarily bad, but it helps to determine the reliability of the seller. If the seller has enough feedback and an approval rating of over 98%, PayPal will guarantee the purchase. There will be a PayPal Buyer Protected logo on the right side of the header auction.

In short, there are bad apples on EBay, there are also bad apples on your local street corner or strip mall.

I use e-bay as a benchmark for a pricepoint. I can almost always meet or frequently beat the pricing asked from different sources. It would be good if you are looking for a replacement panel for a 71 gremlin or other oddball one of a kind items but for most common items you can find deals equal to or better than in local paper or from more reputable on-line vendors.

Stay away from sellers who have had a good seller rating, then suddenly there is a rash of negatives.

It usually means something is terribly wrong in their life, and your transaction could go south fast.

Always always always check shipping costs before bidding.
If they won't provide a shipping cost, or answer your email, move on.

I would also check locally for better prices.
What you pay for shipping on an item, might be made up if you can find the item local even if it is a little higher.

SBN, you are an evil capitalist! :)
Everyone's advice is good....
I think that you will find better deals on new stuff elsewhere.....
It's the used/oddball stuff that makes ebay a good thing ;) .....JK

Watch out for the phrase "and handling". These two words have cost unsuspecting buyers millions over the life of Ebay. It's the perfect phrase to recoupe some lost money in a bad auction and there's nothing you can do about it once you've bid.

spots

Re: Any advice on E-Bay?

Consider all this advice, which IMHO is outstanding in wisdom. IF you still want to bid on an item, do not bid based on the standard increments, ie even $.25, $.50 or $1.00. If you bid on unusual cents you have a better chance of winning a close bid. Say the item you want is currently at $10.00. If the increments are $.50 and you bid say $12.50, if the current high bidder has a proxy bid of $12.50 you lose, but if you bid 12.67, guess what, you win! Because even though your bid isn't the next increment higher, it is still higher. Likewise, if you max bid that same item at $16.93, you would be the high bidder at $13.00. If the person you beat out bid again with this advice at 16.87, you'd still win. Don't use .01,.51,.49,.99, etc as these are common too.

Always read a persons negative feedback and check out the item if possible. I have had good deals with sellers with 3,4,5% negatives because some people don't pay attention to the description adn then whine about it in the feedback. Like anywhere else, BUYER BEWARE!

Re: Any advice on E-Bay?

I am an eBay Gold Powerseller and I use Squaretrade too. I have alot of customers who do not have paypal accounts and I can usually take the credit card # over the telephone or they mail in a US Postal Money Order (Too many fake money orders out there ans USPS are easy to verify authentic).

Hint.... If you want an item DO NOT BID EARLY it will drive up the price. Do your bidding towards the end of the auction. Be advised that if it is a popular item that someone may out bid you in the last 3 seconds (If they are using "bid sniping" software.

Check the sellers feed back rating.... Look at the comments.

If you have any questions about the item ask them early... you can tell how a seller responds if he/she are good sellers.

Bob
360Moto on ebay

Re: Any advice on E-Bay?

I have got some good deals ...but of coarse the shipping cost can suck big time...some I think make their money off shipping and not product BEWARE and be smart ask for a quote on shipping for sure and save their e-mail response
Little story I bought some carbs one person had carbs with 98.00 shipping the one I bought off quoted 14.00 for shipping, when they arrived the cost on shipping sticker was 18.80 he stuck to his quote very honest seller with good parts which I refelted in the feedback, the other guy was just a burner 98.00 for shipping yeah I guess
