Getting ready soon to crank up my newly rebuilt Johnson 40 HP O/B engine and while I do have a brand new Faria Tach for the boat setup, I was wondering if anybody has used a Tiny Tach on the engine stand to set their engine up initially? I see there are many models now and was wondering which would work the better...? Any ideas or actualy results? Or should I just forget the Tiny Tach issue? :)

I have used them. One is a combo tach & hour meter. Basically I use it for the hour meter, but it also does well as a tach for your setups.

Which model did you purchase/use? I see some state for 4 cycle engines and others state for 2 cycle engines...and then there are some that state you need to purchase a marine version... So which one is the one for the usual O/B 2 cycle twin cylinder setup...? When I first read about the Tiny Tach, I thought it worked on virtually any internal combustion engine that had at least one spark plug wire so you could simply wrap the lead around the plug wire and read the RPMs. But as I read more and more about them, seems there are different models for different type engines. That seems to defeat the original purpose in my opinion... I was simply hoping to buy one to set up my O/B and also use it on all my lawn care equipment as well?and on my lawn mower too! Am I understanding that isn't the case with them? Thanks for your reply...

last one i installed had 2 buttons on front that let you choose 1 to 4 rpm per spark (some modern motors can play with them as they fire the plugs more than once) Mainly people use them as a hour meter that also tell you rpm.
For what you want i think a digital timing gun with rpm display would work out better and have a lot more uses than the tiny tach has in the future unless you need a hour meter.

Spark Plugs Engine Digital Tach Hour Meter Tachometer Gauge Motorcycle ATV - Amazon.com

this is the type the place i work for asked me to install as a hour meter with the tac as a bonus. They got upset when i said it could not be done so a manager came over to show me how to install it on a diesel . needless to say after 3 hours and 4 managers later they all agreed it was broke out of the box and i should order the parts i thought i needed. they never would admit that diesels dont have spark plugs.
