We were cruising and heard a noise from the rear. Pulled cover to take a look and saw sparks coming out of this hole in the flywheel cover. We've had this '84 Bayliner about a year. Did the electronic ignition conversion this winter and were taking our first spring trip. I pulled the upper gearbox to see how much I could see from there, but it's feeling like the engine will need to come out to get at the real problem. Just looking for some input. I found a thread of someone with a similar situation with lots of pics and advice too. Thanks for anything, I don't really know what to expect.drive3.JPGdrive1.JPGdrive2.JPG

Yes, the engine needs to come out. Flex plate probably failed.

AQ125/270-Sparks coming from hole in flywheel cover-PART 2.

Pulled the motor, removed the cover. Here's what I found.

Inside of cover pretty dinged up from a couple chunks of metal banging around. Shaft has some play in it. Looks like the metal may have broken off the drive plate. New drive plates(flywheels I guess) are pretty expensive. Most of it looks straight forward enough. I think it's fixable with some forum searches and patience. It's my first time this deep into boat repair. Looking for any input, also, where to look for a more modestly priced alternative for a replacement flywheel.

Thank you Don S. for your reply to my first post. It made the decision to just get started and pull the engine seem less dramatic.

I merged your two thread together since it's basically a continuation of your original thread on the sparks.

I really expected it to be worse, you must have caught it early.

Used flex plate, $150. New intermediate bearings, seals, c-clips, $75. Misc. items for home-made bearing/seal drivers and new snap-ring pliers, $35. Oil, solvents, grease, hardware, $50. Glad I took pictures for re-assembly!! Total, about $310 cash and 25Hrs. All buttoned up and out to the lake, fired right up.....an started banging and rattling like crazy. Shock, Anger, Depression, Denial! Brought it home and decided to think about it a while before I started tearing out the motor again. Turns out I had the flywheel inspection plate on backwards and the new flex plate bolts were sticking through the flywheel and rubbing the inspection plate. Turn the plate around, end of problem. All good to go now, thanks to this forum for all the help and valuable archives!

Hello fellow aq125 owner. I have the same setup. Your good with the camera, could you send a pic or two of the electrical setup at the MBSS and the starter? (main battery selector switch)...Thanks
