I have a 200 HP Johnson Ocean Runner and one of the top mounting bolt support plates has broken through the fiber glass on the transom. I want to get a transom stiffener plate to prevent this from happening in the future, however I need to fix the damage first. My question is, what is the best way to go about repairing the damage. It is not just a surface crack in the gel coat, the fiberglass is definitely cracked around the support plate. The support plat is about 2" x 2".

Truthfully it sounds like a new transom is in order. The core must be rotted out. You want to be very careful with that. A support plate may not be enough.

Be careful!!

You might try some exploratory surgery at the location of the broken support plate. Maybe there was a void when the transom was made & it finally gave way. If so filling with epoxy & filler & remounting plates might work.
If rotted I would replace.
Sometimes a rotted wood core can be heard by tapping with a mallet.

I agree with Dhadley. Check out the rest of the transom before you go patching it up and putting a plate on it. The wood inside is probaly rotted out. It will take you a little more time but in the long run it will be worth it knowing that you won't have any future problems. Peace of mind is priceless.

Thanks for the input. I will definitely do some more exploration. I think it may just be a void seeing how the transom is really solid everywhere else, however I will be cautious and take a closer look.

-Craig
