Any voltmeter capable of the voltage will do. Ie. any normal (less than $10) multimeter will handle this (and a number of other measurings).<br /><br />If you want one permanently fitted, get a marine instrument. Auto instruments won't last in a boat.<br /><br />By reading the battery voltage with engine off, engine running and while switching electrics on you can check your charging system, and the battery's ability to withstand load. Even check if something in your system is causing power to 'vanish' (because it uses power when you do not expect it to).<br /><br />Multimeters are good for many uses when working/diagnosing electrics.
