Maybe this has been posted and someone can point me to an existing thread?
I have a 1994 40hp Mercury Mariner, I have to replace the drive shaft and need to get to the
drive shaft nut in the lower unit to remove it. So, I'm at step one, removing the Bearing Carrier Nut.
I know there is a tool to remove this part but am wondering if there are any other alternatives
to buying the tool. Has anyone rigged up a tool or have directions on easily making one to remove the nut?

I tried tapping it using a screw driver but it instantly bites into the nut.

Any info would be great,

Nick

I've gotten them off in the past without the tool, but it's not wise.
I'm pretty sure those are reverse threads on that nut, so keep that in mind.
Wish I could be more helpful. I'd suspect the tool is for sale on the auction sites fairly cheap.

Nick;

What is your engine s/n as there are two and four cylinder models. I think I have the service manual and when you post the s/n, I will send you a copy if I have it. It will show you the special tools and you can make one yourself.

Hi there Nick, just wanted to drop in to say the job you're about to get deeply involved with can be a pretty complex job that would require a number of specialty tools to both remove and reinstall to certain specifications throughout the process. Sometimes starting off with not using the appropriate tools may just put you in a place to where the job could become even a bit more expensive on you as you will end up damaging the parts that you could have possibly have reused. Even if you end up needing to cut the bearing carrier nut off, you will sill need to buy the bearing carrier nut removal/installation tool to torque it back on to 100 ft lb.

By the way, if your cover/nut is of the plastic material, then it is not recommended to reuse the cover/nut. You will need a new one anyways, so just ignore some of what I just said above and just carefully cut it off for now.:facepalm:

Good luck.:eek::D

I have the 4 cylinder model serial # 0C188040.

Yes, my nut is made of nylon. I didn't realize that i needed to replace it, so thanks for the advice. I am still not planning on tearing it up at the moment and want to do everything right.

That s/n comes up as:

MARINER - ( 40 H.P. (1989M ))
Serial No: 0C188040 Model No: 70404129D

Parts and Service Bulletin list for s/n 0C188040:

Search Results - Crowley Marine

The service manual you require is P/N: 90-814676R1 and I can send you a copy if you PM me with an email address.

The plastic spanner nut you are talking about will not handle 100 ft pounds even with the spanner tool, give it a try and see what happens.
