Hello there, try these links for boat registration information.

http://www.ccg-gcc.gc.ca/obs-bsn/regs-stds/compliancerates_e.htm

All recreational vessels under 15 gross tons and powered by an engine 10 horsepower (7.5 kilowatts) or more must be licensed or registered, regardless of where they operate in Canada.

http://www.ccg-gcc.gc.ca/obs-bsn/regs_e.htm

http://www.ccg-gcc.gc.ca/obs-bsn/contact_e.htm

I hope this helps.

What he said, but just to be clearer, if you are running less than 10hp, you do not need to register it at all. You need the boaters card and are required to carry all the safety equipment, but no registration.

If you plan to run over 10hp, you need to register it with CCRA. If your boat already has letters on it, I suspect it will be a bit of an effort to register it. If the boat does not have letters, I'm sure you could explain that you are upping the HP from how it was previously used and not have a problem.

Here in Kelowna, B.C., the registration is done at the airport. You will need to call CCRA to find out where it is done locally but it is free and pretty much hassle free. I was done in about 5 minutes when I bought my last boat.

But if you don't plan to go over 10hp, don't worry about it.

Just to add a couple of points.

If the boat is already licensed but you do not have the papers then you need to sign a document that basically says that you bought a boat without licensing papers blah blah blah. This document must be stamped by a notary. Then you take this document and the bill of sale to a customs officer who will issue you new papers.
Get all the forms from the customs office.

Serge
