Bolt lube?

Hello I have a 1995 yamaha C75 outboard. I have just started to replace my upper shift shaft. I am also replacing the impeller. All is going well with these jobs, but (oh yes there is a "but") I am getting conflicting advice and I need some one to set me straight. I have three sets of bolts to replace. All the bolts eleven powerhead mouting bolts, five lower foot bolts and four waterpump bolts came out fine(I know a miracle right). The book I have on my motor says to use loctite#241(blue) on the waterpump bolts, and loctite#271(red)on the powerhead and lower foot bolts when reassembling them. The man at the boat shop says to use anti-sieze on all bolts. Then the guy at the yamaha shop(expert) says to use waterproof grease on all bolts or I will be sorry. I use the boat in saltwater mainly. Can someone please tell me what I need to use on these bolts? Any tips will be appreciated. Thanks

Re: Bolt lube?

Listen to the man in the shop.
Waterproof grease or similar lube (Prop shaft paste)is fine but be careful if you are winding the bolt into a blind hole as you risk blowing out the hole from hydraulic pressure if you overlube the threads.

Some anti sieze pastes are not compatible with aluminum and salt water, use caution here.

Loctite compounds are great if you dont want bolts etc to come loose but they make fasteners difficult to remove at the least.

Good luck,

Peter

Re: Bolt lube?

Well which shop do you mean? The boat shop man or the yamaha shop man? I do not think I will need to open these connections again, so I am leaning toward the loctite. Does the loctite keep the corrosion from forming around the threads? Do you think that lockwashers and torque with anti-sieze are enough to keep a bolt in an outboard with all the vibrations? When I removed the bolts they had a green paste around the threads, is this loctite or anti-sieze from the factory?

Waterproof grease on all bolts. (lightly). That green paste is waterproof grease mixed with water clean and regrease.

Re: Bolt lube?

Thank you Vinney and Peterf, information is the best tool. I will use the waterproof grease(lightly). I just sure hope the bolts do not back out. Thank you again and safe boating everyone!
