I have a 1975??? chrysler 25 hp outboard. Model # V W B-52125. Serial # 57X 20305. Mongomery Ward Sea King. I originally had trouble putting in forward gear and was unsuccessful with adjustments, so I replaced all the gears (although the wear on the teeth was minimial). I decided while everything was apart I should replace all the seals and the impeller. I then took it to the lake and it quickly over heated. I dismantled it to discover all the fins we totally gone on the new impeller. I'm not sure what happened?? I never started it without water although I did start it with the hose attachment. I remember looking the motor over thoroughly and doubting whether water was actually getting where it needed to. Also I noticed the housing does have some pits and grooves in it, (could this have caused it). Note; the old impeller was hard. I read some other postings but was unclear about whether or not if the fins wern't put in the correct direction or if it wasn't lubricated (with dish soap or a little oil) what the result would be. I ordered a new housing and impeller and would apppreciate advise on how to continue as well as what happened. Thanks :)

Re: broken impeller

With a nic like that I doubt whether you will find many takers to help you out.

Check for blockages at the inlet. Sounds like the impellor was run dry.

Re: broken impeller

Sounds like when you put it back together you turned the water pump housing the wrong way as you pushed it down over the impellor.I use a little grease to help assembly & protect against running dry when you first start the engine.Check the water ways for blockages replace the impellor & if the housing is damaged in any way replace it or be prepared to do this again & again & again... so replace that too.The motor turns clockwise so turn the new pump housing anti clockwise as you install it dont forget the grease/vaseline/soap whatever!!When you start up use muffs with the hose on full/in the water or in a test tank with the water level above the pump these things are gravity/pressure fed until they are running.Good luck :)
