Hiya chaps/chap-esses.. Newbie here.
I bought a boat with this engine on, and have no idea of it's history, other than, "She ran ok last time I took her out..." from the previous owner.
With contact breakers at 19 thou, ignition timing supposedly spot on, and throttle pickup point set to the book, this engine still sneezes at all power settings, so much so, that once or twice, it sheared the woodruff key on the flywheel. There are no timing marks on the flywheel on this engine (thanks Chrysler!) so I marked TDC for No. 1 Cylinder. I Fitted new contact breakers, and condensers (why dont these things work until you scrape all the muck off the surface?!)
I tried running the engine on each cylinder individually, by removing one pluglead, and the other cylinder still sneezed under load.
Repeating this for the other cylinder did exactly the same. I can't see any sparks flying around at night. The only ignition thing left, is a pair of new magneto coils(you can't just change the plugleads). I have looked all around the rotating flywheel with a xenon timing light, trying to see if there is an associated spark with the sneeze, and there is no sign of the timing mark anywhere other than where it's supposed to be.
Could this be a carb/fuel problem or are there any other silly mistakes I have made please?!!
Thanks in advance,
Dalex

Sorry folks, bad form replying to own posts, but it's a 305HA not a 105 as I said earlier... Doh!

Chrysler made a special timing tool for your engine. It's not available anymore. However, the Seloc manual for Chrysler gives an alternate method for timing the engine. You'll need a magic marker and tape measure. I would also disassemble and soak the carb in carb cleaner then rebuild with a carb kit. The kit is available at NAPA. With an engine of that age(1970?), I would also rebuild the fuel pump. Kit is also available at NAPA. I am fairly certain that the point clearance is .020" on Chrysler magneto ignitions.

dalex,

Many times "sneezing" is caused by a lean fuel mixture.

'mornin' dalex,

can you get the "sneeze" to minimize by partially choking her? Why? from here, it sounds more like a fuel/air problem, then like an ignition issue. the solution could be as simple a adjusting or servicing the carbs(s) or,......
well, could be a leak in the crank case seal or carb gasket or,.. just about any where.

try choking (partial) her and let us know how she responds.

Good Luck

Thanks a million guys! Well, maybe 999,994 as it still sneezes occasionally! Well, the trouble appears to have been in the float height. It didn't match what the book said, and, you guessed it, lean mixture was the result. Fixed that, together with removing 26 years of built-up general carb-silt, and the old weed-snatcher runs pretty nice now!
I have been testing it all in a tank, so I have yet to try her out on the water. Hopefully, weather permitting, that will be this weekend, with a handfull of patient friends.. I'll let you know how it all goes, but once again, thanks for some brilliant advice.
Cheers, and happy boating,
Dalex
