I have a chrysler 45 Hp 1967 Model 45781 outboard. The motor will start when choked but will not idle smooth and dies no mater where I adjust the carb idle screw. I have to keep pulsing the choke button to keep it running and to get it into forward gear. After I get the throttle past 25 percent it seems to run great even at top speed. Is this electrical, fuel pump or fuel line problems or carb or all of the above. The nearest place to get parts for this motor is 80 miles away and I would like to get everything I need on one trip. Have you got any ideas?

You didn't say if your engine is run regularly so,I'll assume it isn't. It sounds to me like a fuel problem. I would soak and rebuild the carb and replace diaphragm in the fuel pump. Also, you could remove and inspect the idle mixture screw. If you need a new one, Langs outboard sells them for $10. NAPA has the carb kit and fuel pump kit for less than $25 total. You could also replace the fuel hose assy. for about $30. I think you can get all these parts online also. Sounds like ignition system is good but you can still get points and condensers online for <$30. The coils are more difficult to come by.

Thankyou Scotiany for your help. Didnt even think of NAPA. They have the carb kit and the fuel filter and I should be able to get started on it tomorrow. What a cool website. Thanks again

Re: Chrysler 45HP wont idle

I rebuilt the carb and the fuel pump. When attempting to remove one of the press fit seats on the fuel pump I broke one and had to replace it. I also noticed the fuel pump did not have a gasket. Just the diaphram. I put in new gaskets and diaphram and put on new fuel line with screw type clamps. I adjusted the float to 13/32" upside down to gasket and right side up to 13/16" to gasket.

Took it to the lake and it is running much better. Thanks for your help

Glad to hear of your success. As far as welch plugs, I don't know much except that you can drill them out when rebuilding the carb. The carb repair kit I have has replacement plugs but, to be honest, I don't think it's that important if the engine is running good. BTW, does yours use the Champion L4J plug? Both Champion and NGK make replacement for them. I got new points and condensers from boatingsolutions.com for $30 plus shipping. Looked in iboats beforehand but , didn't see Chrysler ignition parts for our age motors listed.
