clicking sound in reverse

clicking sound when i put motor in reverse. it seems to run fine in forward. i hit a submerged object 3-4 weeks ago. put on new prop. now this problem. 40 hp yamaha, 1986 model 40 ejl 3 cyl. thanks.

Clicking in reverse is usually the teeth of the clutch dogs skipping over each other. If it is after an event the damage could be inside the gearbox (like a bent pin) but check that the shift cable is correctly adjusted first. Disconnect the spark plugs and have someone lock the fly wheel, then turn the prop by hand while in reverse gear if the dogs are skipping you will feel 3 equally spaced tight spots.<br />good luck

how do i check to see if the cable is adjusted correctly. thanks

my 40 suzuki has a manual shift lever on the left side. You should be able to shift manually in reverse to see if it is just an exterior adjustment
