got off work early today, and headed straight to the boat to hitch up. didn't take the time to change out of my uniform. i trailered the boat from annapolis to jersey tonight for winter storage at the parent's place. i was getting off the turnpike and stopped at the toll booth. i handed the lady the ticket and the $1.30 toll. she took the money, but then stopped and looking at my uniform asked, "are you in the service?". i answered yes. she said, "well, you don't have to pay a toll." i said, "really?" she said, "i pay the toll for all of our troops to show my support. have a good night." i thanked her and drove away. it touched me.

I was flying back from Saudi Arabia and it was military charter until I got to Philly. Then straight commercial.<br /><br />I didnt have time to change into my civilian clothes because I would have missed my connecting flight.<br /><br />So I was in my Desert BDUs.<br /><br />It was about 7:30 in the morning by the time we reached cruise alttitude and I ordered a beer.<br /><br />The Attendant asked me " you do know its 7:30 in the morning dont you?"<br /><br />I told her it was 7:30 at night where I was coming from.<br /><br />She took my $3 and gave me my beer. What a great tasting beer it was!!! :D <br /><br />About 5 minutes later she came back with my $3 and said the pilot wanted to let me know he appreciates what we do for the country and said the drinks were on them.<br /><br />Then the inflight movie started and they wanted $5 for the headphones. I declined.<br /><br />A few minutes later the Flight attendant came up to me with a set of headphones and told me a gentleman a few rows back paid for them and he wanted her to tell me he said thank you for what we do.<br /><br />I really didnt care for the special treatment, it made me feel uncomfortable, but it does feel good to know that people out there truly appreciate what we do.

After reading the thread....I reflected on my time in the military and the times I traveled to and from my station. It's good to see the folks of the US finally showing some respect and consideration for our Military Personnel for the jobs they do.<br /><br />My time time was during the Viet Nam era.<br /><br />Keep up the good work guys. You certainly have my respect.

Playing with my new found toy tonight the "qoute button" :) <br /><br />I am so happy about this! <br />Back in our day 60's, 70's and 80's, the Military were treated as second class or worse. This was when the Ted Crappels, and the Jerk Jennings were in thier Hayday! They are "IMHO" still are Anti American socialists..<br />But TODAY they are Afraid to say so.. Ratings might go down.. what POS's IMO :) <br />And I didn't even say a potty mouth word but made my point! <br /><br /> :) and another :)

Re: cool thing happened to me today...

Sometime in Feb. of 1971, my Dad got to come home early from Viet Nam. Communications being what they were then, we knew nothing about this. I was in First Grade. He flew to Mobile Al. and had to get a taxi to bring him home 85 miles away. The fare was $45.00. Well, when the cabby dropped him off, he told Dad that his boss had told him not to charge him! This was during a bad time in the US and it meant alot to Dad to get some respect. I don't know the cabby or the company, but it means alot to me now that I am older. Then it just meant Dad was home, alive. Thanks to all our Soldiers and there families for what they do!! God Bless Them ALL!!

with all the noisey complainers we hear all the<br />time, it's real easy to forget about the "silent"<br />majority in this country. still nice to be remineded<br />once in a while they are still around though :)

mattttt25, I bet that it felt good to be appreciated for the job you guys do. Tough job in tough times. You know what I think would be a good idea? Why don't you buy a pizza, card, or some small gift to give to the toll booth worker? I think it would make HER day to realize that what SHE does is appreciated too. I once bought about 125 bucs of pizza for a automotive maint department for a good diagnosis on my truck. They could have ripped me off as I was convinced it was a major buc problem. Turned out to be something simple that they repaired for free. The 125 bucs was cheap for what I was going to spend. And man were they surprised!!
