Re: Cover your tracks on the Internet

I keep mine set at 0...plus I clear out the history and cache manually before I turn off the PC....

Also it would be wise to be using some type of firewall, whether it be software or physical. Zone Labs has a very basic one for free... They have an upgraded one for purchase (around $50 or so) and there are others....You can't believe the amount of hits that try to come in but get blocked...If you're not running a firewall, there are people that are looking into your system and can actually use your system to do havoc to others.

You never know who is sneaking around your computer until it is too late.
You may have a secret lure that catches more fish that you told a friend about on the internet or that secret fishing hole. You know the one !! the secret one that you fish on the week day cause evrerybody is at work and it isn't a secret on the week end when everybody else is fishing it; That's the one ! !

Theres a free program called Ad-aware, you can download in minutes and it is supposed to clean all the data miners out of your systems registry. Anyone know if this really works?

Zone Alarm Pro, Firewall router, Ad-Aware, Spy-Bot Search and Destroy, Windows Washer...

I use all. A few of the programs don't get it all out whereas the others will. I haven't found one single program that will successfully wipe it all in one shot.

Don't forget that simply deleting your temp files and emptying the cache doesn't completely cover your tracks.
There are 'cookie' files left behind. Those are the little buggers who are doing the tracking.

And to top it all off, do you think you have really deleted it? Guess again.
Get a program called "EnCase".
This is cop software that goes into your computer and finds the deleted files.
Believe me...Just when you thought you erased that photo your Wife doesn't want you to see?
Encase can sniff out each file and delete the "already deleted' files.

And it's not that we are trying to hide anything 'questionable' on our computers.
Like most of us, I don't want anyone snooping in my business and/or trying to track what products I'm buying just so they can send me an e-mail about it later. They there's the financial business I do on the computer etc...
For my eyes only thanks.

H.

Re: Cover your tracks on the Internet

I have used AdAware, Windows Washer and Mail Washer for the past year almost. All are good especially the mail washer as it allows you to preview / read your mail before it is downloaded from the server. Can beat most virus's, spams & scams before they get into your PC. Very good with MS Outlook & Outlook Express.
You still need to backup with a top antivirus as well.
I hate the people that spread this garbage as my email address was listed on our Company Website <www.eagleequipment.co.nz> and I am under serious attack some days from spam mail. At least I can filter it out as I am unable to just change my mail address.
The Net is a great tool to use wisely.

Happy New Year to All.
Jan 01/2004 here now, 09:00 am. Hot sunny Summers day and looking out N/east over the South Pacific Ocean. No surf today.

Pete

Re: Cover your tracks on the Internet

Don't hurt to have a few good programs loaded to protect your self from the internet denizens. I run a scan a least once a week for spy ware and the like. Always find something. It's a real good idea if yer' on a DSL like I am when you are virtually on line 24/7/365.

Always someone out there to try and make life miserable for ya'.

i just wanted to give a salute to all those extreme p.c.'rz!!!

it is true, you will probably be infested on the 'puter sometime or another. and the stats are there. i don't have them though. sorry

my 2c is that this is the hotspot(computers) for crime in the future... but i still work at home with almost no security whatsoever. since this is not listing addresses, email, IP's,etc i might be safe telling y'all :D

consider it like i do - if you have a security system on your vehicles, house and/or boat, then its a situation you want to remedy. but don't get overly frightened, as its true here as anywhere- if they want in- they will get in

Re: Cover your tracks on the Internet

True Ebb... A lock only keeps out an honest thief.

The trick is not to make yourself that target.
Stay behind a firewall. Out-of-sight, Out-Of-mind. Firewalls keep your ports blocked and hidden.

If you are real paranoid, you can run through proxies or 'anonymous web surfing' sites.
They completely hide your ip and make it 99.99% impossible to trace your surfing habits. An excellent way to cover your goofing around at work! :D
There are also sites that offer 're-mailers' that hide your tracks when sending e-mail.
Those sites work good if you want to send some hate mail that you don't want traced back to you (like sending e-mail to the government for example  )

If a resourceful hacker wants in, he probably will, but if you don't go advertising something he wants and make it difficult for him to get in, he'll pass and move on to the next poor sap.

I keep in mind that anytime you are connected to the internet, you are venerable. Nothing is 100% safe no matter who you talk to or what software boasts about.

H.
