I am new to this forum and looked everywhere before posting for any help. I recently purchased a 1976 Tom Boy trihull fishing boat with a 1976 40 horse Johnson outboard. I am presently rebuilding the gearcase (not a drop of gear oil in it - but lots of rust), the cooling system, the points, condenser and plugs with new coils, and all new seals and bearings and of course the entire fuel system. The motor is a 40E76R series. My question is I need a new cowling cover gasket seal which is no longer available. The actual Johnson part number is 0317173. Does anybody know where I could find such an item or what will work in its place? It will be like new when it is finished with a new paint job and new decals as well. Just can't find that seal. Any help is absolutely appricated indeed. And thanks for allowing me to post here...
