I have a question and maybe someone can answer it. Where does the money from the CRV tax on aluminum cans and bottles go? I'm wondering, because they're going to raise it here in California from 2 1/2 cents to 4 cents.
I pay 2 1/2 cents per can now and don't get it back. Soon I'll be giving away 4 cents. What is the solution? :(

i thought the crv is the california redemption value. you pay it when you buy the beverage, and get it back when you turn the container in for recycling. what's wrong with that?

Not everybody recycle's their aluminum cans and plastic beverage bottles. That's why God made "Dumpster Divers."

The State of Confusion, (California), collects the deposits on the beverage containers. Lord only knows where the money goes after that.

Not too often do you see something with a deposit left unatended in this state. :D

...Bob in Calif...

well bob, if you took the time to recycle, you wouldn't have to strain your brain wondering how the man wastes your 4 cents.

Drink tap water, and use it to make your own beer and soda. That way, the gov't won't be collecting the tax on you.

Hey mattttt.............

I didn't say I don't recycle. I'm sorry if you got the wrong impression from my post. I was refering to the people who don't recycle and just leave their aluminum cans and plastic beverage bottles laying around or toss them into waste containers.

There are many recycling programs here on the left coast. The refuse companies provide recycle containers for free to all of their customers, for the recycling of cans, bottles, newspapers, etc.

When I said you don't see a product with a "crv" value "unattended" for very long, means someone who recycles these items will pick it or them from the tossed location and redeem it/them for cash.

We recycle everything that can be recycled. Ever since the "deposit" was imposed on certain cans and bottles, streets, empty lots and highways have never been so clean.

Naturally not every recycleable item with a "crv" is redeemed. I was just wondering where the monies paid to the state for the deposit goes in this state. It is just another way for the state to collect unacountable revenue.

I'm sure the politicians just add it to their huge "pork barrel" programs in this state. That's were the "waste" really comes into play.

...Bob in Calif...

Here's the thing... I'm charged 2 1/2 cents per can or bottle. I recycle and am paid by the lb. Just doesn't ever come out right, the way I'm thinking.
Bob, you are right... everyday I go for my jog I come home with at least 3 recyclable bottles or cans. Just someone's money in my pocket. I'll take anything I can get.

Speaking as a Government finance guy most likely what happens is this.

Tax goes in to a liability account (because they have to pay it back upon redemption). However, the interest earned by the money goes into the general treasury. And from what I've read. the Government is making out because all the money that is eligible for refund is not being collected. Just my .02 based on what happens here in Jersey.

Howdy Jgreg....

This is an actual tax to be imposed on each plastic bag, grocery, variety store, drunk store (liquor store), etc. There is no provision to rebate the "tax" as a deposit, to the buyer. So each time you purchase something, no matter what is, you pay 4 cents per plastic bag.

I suspect before too long after this bill takes effect, there will be another bill demanding...
"Each Purchase SHALL Be Double Bagged." :D

...Bob in Calif...
