Deck - Hull - Rub Rail Problem

We're thinking about buying a used Polar 256 CC.

The rub rail (molding) covering the seam between the deck and hull is pulled away from the fiberglass for a short stretch near the stern. The rub rail and molding screw is pulled out about 1.5 inches at its furthest from the deck/hull.

The rub rail is NOT broken. It looks a bit like a strap hold, if that makes any sense.

The problem seems to be confined to about 8 - 10 inches of rub rail. It is located on the port side near the stern, where the deck curves into the transom structure.

I can see the seam between the deck and hull where the rub rail has been pulled up. No sign of sealant.

Otherwise the hull and boat looks in good shape.

Does this suggest stress/abuse to the hull? Can it be repaired?

Or should I run as fast as I can?

I really appreciate any advice, as the log-in name says it all. Thanks.

Re: Deck - Hull - Rub Rail Problem

Sounds like the previous owner hit a piling or something. Probably not too much to worry about. It's definitely fixable. Check the fiberglass in that area very carefully and make sure there is no visable signs of extensive fiberglass crushing. Expect to find gel coat cracking for sure but look at the layers below the gel coat. If there is a patch of soft fiberglass then it will need repairing. If so work a deal to reduce the price of the boat equal to the repair or have the guy repair it before the sale. If the glass is good then the rub rail just needs to be reattached in that area. Good luck.

Thanks, neighbor, that's a big help and makes sense.

Go Terps! (I can say that now that Virginia has assumed its usual position at the bottom of the ACC.)
