Usually,..... If All the Holes line up,....... Perfectly........
It Doesn't Matter which side has the printing on it,......... Unless it says "This Side Up"............... :D

Re: Dumb(gasket) question?

Gee, wonder what they wanted it to "Face". Sounds like some of the printing may be gone.
Face Drive would have meant something.
If it was a Mercruiser gasket, it would go either way, not sure about the Sierra.
You could always lay it on some paper and trace it out, turn the gasket over and see how it matches up. My guess is it would be the same.
NOTE: I said my GUESS without actually seeing your gasket.

Re: Dumb(gasket) question?

 I figured it out either side will work I am not always the sharpes nail in the bin. But I did get the out drive on it is only about 1/8in. gap left will the nuts pull it in the rest of the way or should it push all the way in with out any trouble. I just had the out drive resealed and the short shaft that hooks to u-joints replaced and u-joints. I have taken the out drive off a few times and I always had it slide on all the way to the bell houseing but that was with the old parts on. Thanks again for any help.

As long as everything is in place, (making sure the o ring for the water passage hasn't fallen out!), then yes, you should be able to simply snug it up with the nuts.

:) Fishermark, Thanks I did put some goop on the o-ring and the big o-ring that goes in the bell houseing so they would not fall off. I just did not want to bolt down till I was sure it was ok. Re: Dumb(gasket) question?

When you put in a new ring (a in picture) it will hold the drive out a bit, as it should. That ring is what keeps water out of the bellows.

Re: Dumb(gasket) question?

Before you tighten it down ,I would recommend trying to turn the prop while pushing the drive.Incase the splines are not exactly lined up ,a slight turn of the prop/driveshaft will line them up.You would not want to force it.Just make sure thats not what is keeping the drive that 1/8 inch out.Charlie

Re: Dumb(gasket) question?

Sounds like you have it covered !! Make sure as soon as you tighten them down to check and see if you have all your modes(fwd, rev neut.).I am a real worry wart when it comes to putting the drive on.It is a relatively simple task ,but so many things can go wrong.Ujoint catching on the large Oring and moving it out of place, shift cable turning out of groove, shift arm not lining up under belhousing, accidentally moving prop and taking drive out of fwd w/o realizing until drive is on.You will pick up many little tricks of the trade here that will help assure you that none of this crap happens.Like glueing the large Oring in place, duct taping the prop from moving etc......Charlie

,duct taping the prop from moving
I use a 15" Bungie Cord,......

Hook 1 end to the Cav. Plate,... Around the Propshaft a couple of times,+ Back to the otherside of the Cav. Plate,........
Then turn the Propshaft Backwards a turn or 2,+ Shift into Forward,.......
The tension from the Bungie Cord will Hold it in Forward til He!! Freezes Over............ ;)

Re: Dumb(gasket) question?

Yes Bondo, but anytime I hear bungee cord ,my "BOYS" get a little nervous since the last bungee I used on my boat cover didnt cooperate and came back at about 90 miles per hour to greet my "BOYS".   I can still feel the pain!! So for me,no bungees on my cover and duct tape only on my prop.Charlie

Re: Dumb(gasket) question?

When you bungee it make sure to get a bungee long enough that you don't need a come-along to stretch it in place! Your "boys" will appreciate it. ;)
