Goodmorning,
On the above (with the DPS drive), how would an operator know if there is an issue with the engine system? The Seloc manual I have mentions a MIL (multifunction illumination lamp). I don't see this on my dash (boat is 4 winns horizion 248). The book also mentions diagnosing with a scan tool or a code reader. Can the code (if any) be read with a test light? If so, how? If not, where can I purchase a code reader tool? I assume this would be cheaper than a scan tool....
I am asking this because I just purchased the boat and used it once. It runs fine so there may not be a problem...but at idle, it seems a little rougher than I think it should and it smells a bit rich for fuel injection. I also noticed a bit of "exhaust soot" if you will on the back of the front prop at the gear housing. Again, all might be normal and fine, but I am a certified auto tech and can't help wanting to prove to myself that is is OK or not, so I am looking for advise on how to run a check on the system. I don't mind buying a tool if needed.
Thanks for any advise from someone that knows these engines and the management system. It seems like a good powerplant.
