engine flooding

Hi, I'm new to boating and last year bought a small fishing boat with a 9.9 force on it. The guy didn't have the manual but told me to push the primer button 6 or 7 times before starting. Well I found that to be bad advice and flooded out several times last year. I have since learned that 1 time is enough. Whats the best thing to do in the field with a flooded motor to get it started? I also changed the gearbox oil this year and noticed no ring type gasket on the drain screws. Is this model supposed to have some type of ring? I didn't notice any leaking. Any info appreciated.

Re: engine flooding

The screws for the lower unit should have nylon washers. The mercury part number for these is 12-191833. they cost about 50 cents each. You should be able to get these at any place that sells marine parts. What did the oil look like when you drained it.

Not sure on the first part of your post. My guess is crank with choke open. Maybe pull plugs and let them air dry to speed up the evaporation of the gas in the flooded cylinders. What ratio are you mixing the oil in your gas?
