Hello all. I am new to this forum, and thought I would give it a shot. I have a bayliner 14ft with a FORCE 50HP 1989 engine. While out fishing Yesterday I started smelling something funny. It was not the stink bait!. We were anchored, motor off, ignition off. I kept smelling a burning/electrical smell, but no one else could. So we headed in anyway. The motor would not start, dead battery! Good thing had the troller battery. Hooked it up, and the force started right up. Came home, and was messing around today.

Couldn't see anything perticular, so I hooked up the battery. Started smelling funny again. Started feeling around the engine, and quickly blistered my finger on the bridge rectifier. Unhooked the battery. Cussed several times... Pulled the bridge rec. off, and it was melted! very hot and smelly.

So With the 4 brige rec wires OFF and Taped up, I wanted to make sure the engine was OK, hooked up garden hose, and Vroom, it started like a champ. So I figured I could go fishing, bug the engine would have to use the battery, now that It can't be charged. Got everything packed, and tested one more time, and NOTHING. NO SPARK. The engine turns over great, but no spark on #1 or #2.

It had worked with the briged rec off just 1 hour earlier, but not I have messed with it for about 6 hours and still no luck. I Just read to test the lanyard sw to make sure it isn't messed up. I'll repost with that info.

Any suggestions would be a great help! Thanks and happy memorial day!.

OK, tested the lanyard switch, its OK. I still am getting NO spark at all. I pulled the flywheel off to make sure all the stators were ok, and they were. Best I can figure is the little blue control box is busted. I put a meter up to where one of the coils plugs in, and cranked. No voltage was seen, so I guess thats why the coils aren't firing? Does anybody have any suggestions before I replace the Blue control module?

just an uninformed thought. some ignitions are sensitive to "spikey" feed back. if your is, running without the rectifyer/battery could damage the power pack.

again, i don't know this motor but have ready many-a-post on problems resulting from running without the filtering effects of the rectifyer/battery.

???
Good Luck
