Fuel flow sensor install on VP 5.7GS

Hello guys, need some expert opinion on the install of a fuel flow sensor on my VP 5.7GS. The unit I will be installing is a Garmin GFS 10 to be linked to my Garmin 740s. My dilemma is this: The garmin fuel flow meter requires a pre filter before the sensor to keep the paddle from being clogged. My engine has a factory spin on fuel filter mounted on the engine, then electric fuel pump then USCG lines with screw on fittings to the carb. The fuel flow sensor has barb fittings for rubber line and can not be feasibly or safely put behind the engine mounted filter and fuel pump. The sensor came with a 3/8 metal canister type fuel filter to put in front of the unit. I don't want that to be the first filter in my system as I feel it doesn't have the capacity off a larger spin on and has the potential to clog quickly. My question is would it be detrimental or cause excessive restriction in fuel flow if i were to add another spin on type fuel filter in front of the sensor and then have the engine mounted fuel filter behind it? If it is feasible, what brand filter would you recommend? TIA

Wouldn't hurt a thing, any water separating fuel filter kit will work.

Re: Fuel flow sensor install on VP 5.7GS

One other question. To do this I am having to add a piece of 3/8 fuel line from the new spin on filter housing to the spin on filter housing to the engine. I went down to my local marine parts store and explained to him what I needed and the application. He gives me fuel line that has SAE J30R9 on it. I asked him if I should use USCG A-1 hose and he tells me that is the equivalent of USCG Type B1 and is what I should use. I've looked at the USCG requirements on their website and aside from not being a lawyer I need someone to tell me in plain english if I can use this fuel line under the dog house of my boat to supply fuel from the spin on filter housing to the motor. Thanks

The B1 is used for outboards, and should not be used inside an engine compartment of an IO. The hose is not designed to pass a burn test.
The A1 hose is designed for IO's. It's really too stiff and heavy duty to make good outboard hose. It was designed to pass the fire test as well.
