Getting mad at an 888

I have a 1974 searay with an 888 mercruiser, and it is really making me mad. I fixed my water leak and I am trying to put my stern drive back on but it will not go the last 2 inches. I have it resting on the studs and it is just shy of being able to put the nuts on the studs its taunting me. I have lined up the shift linkage everything looks perfect but it just will not go.

did you grease the o-rings on the splined shaft??

no i did not. I didn't think it was needed

did you check the engine alignment

I never moved the engine. All I did was pull the drive to replace the bellows. I went and bought some marine lube this afternoon but its raining now (4th of july tradition). We have about an hour of daylight left and I am hoping the rain lets up long enough to pull the drive back off and lube every thing up like crazy.
