Ok, I am green to this boating stuff. But I bought one a year ago and it's bean running pretty good. I was wondering where I can find some info out about the outdrive. Here's the Paul Harvey on the motor and out drive.... it is/was a 95 merc 5.0 305 (of358602). That motor let loose. I dropped in a 350 5.7. My question is is the gearing correct in the outdrive and what gearing do I have. How can I find this out? It's a merc apha1 Gen 2 serial OF497376. If anyone could tell me or point me in the direction to find out the help would be appreciated. Also what is proper gearing if not correct

guessing the 5.0 used the 1.84 and the 5.7 used 1.50
gear ratio should be stamped in the side of the drive

1.65 gear ratio was standard on the 5L. You should be fine, probably have to prop up a little.

You should be able to overcome the ratio difference with a prop. They are not that far off. If it is a bigger boat the lower ratio might even work out better.
