That does not look like gear oil , more like a spent gas/oil mix. My 225 and 9.9 will do that exact same thing if I run the motor on the muffs because it will not get warm enough to burn off the excess oil. It will also do it after a De Carb , are you running some type of sea foam or fuel additive in this tank of gas? Could be burning off some crap out of your powerhead because of the cleaner in the gas.
Also ive found if i pre mix my gas too rich it will do the same thing.

Also what do you mean by your motor was " spitting smoke "

ok all may be resolved. i took it out today cleaned it out with deep creep a lot of smoke let it sit for 15 min. its doing fine at this point. start it up and slowly move to plane. i hit some waves and it started not going over 2500 rpm again. almost cried. then i noticed the waves would make it run faster or slower. if i was going fast and hit a wave it would slow down. if i hit a wave going slow it would speed up. i was like great another problem. brought it back to the dock. drove it onto trailer. i dont usually do this but i ran out of help today. anyway got it up and went to tilt motor and it wouldnt tilt. it had no power at all. i had to flush it so i figured i would find the short there and fix it. i go to where the battery cable is connected and find wires loose behind the connection. ONE OF WHICH goes stright to the ignition coils specifically. so i tightened it up and voila power to tilt and power to engine. ran out of daylight so i flushed it and now i am home but tomorrow should be a good day i figure it was not able to draw enough current for the spark at higher speeds. also i noticed why its smoking since i had to take off side cowls i have a crack in the vacuum hose for the fuel pump. still pumping to the oil but not as hard to the gas. its been an interesting day. cant wait for tomorrow though. its going down. im gonna make this motor my B*%^& and then im gonna go catch fish.

spoke too soon. ahh well thanks for all your helpful suggestions. im throwing in the towel. i learned alot about two stroke engines. but this is defeating me. ran great for about 3 minutes and then kept the same problem nothing over 2500rpm. still not sucking fuel with new lines running from a jerry can with new gas and new pump and clean carbs and new vacuum hose for the pump. no leaks that i can find verified by a clear hose spliced in before vro system. i am confused and tired and broke. i will turn it in to the shop and go to my month long course. later.
